Hello Fort Worth,

Because of my potential new job, my wife and I might be moving to the area with our newborn son. My new job would be with the state of Texas located on Phoenix Drive in West Fort Worth near I-30 & I-820.

We are looking for places to rent that is commute wise to work. Do you have any suggestions of where we should look?

We did find a nice duplex in North Richland Hills that is within our price price. I know it is 18 miles away but there’s I-820 without having to go through Downtown Ft. Worth. Will this work?

I will be in Fort Worth or Austin. I got the job with the state where there are multiple openings in my field throughout TX; the placement and my salary is in middle of negotiations. I’m trying to get a general idea of where to look for a place to live commute wise in both areas ahead of time. Once I know, I will be down there actually looking for a place to live. I’m not local coming from Arkansas. I hope that make sense.

It is okay. I should have been more clear in Austin thread. I hope I’m given the Austin job but if not, I still like DFW Metroplex. It’s much cheaper but Austin seems to be more compatible with my personality, interests, and political views.

I found three rentals. How are the areas for living?

76116 - West Ft. Worth around Phoenix Drive area

76119 - Area around Wyatts High School

Also one in North Richland Hills near TCC-NE Campus

How is North Richland Hills commute wise to West Ft. Worth on I-820?

North Richland Hills to west Fort Worth on 820 can get pretty messy, especially in the NRH area. That said, out of the three places you mentioned, the NRH rental seems to be in a safer area.

The west FW rental (76116) seems to be located in the Las Vegas Trail area; very high crime and not safe at all if it's in or near one of the apartment complexes around there. It should be a bit safer if you are in a house away from some of the apartments along Las Vegas Trail or Calmont though.

The area around O.D. Wyatt High School also seems to have some of the same issues (mainly lower-income, though the crime is not as pronounced in my opinion) as Las Vegas Trail. Many refugee families live in the Ladera Palms apartment complex across the street from Wyatt HS.

What price range are you looking at? And 4-5 years down the line do you expect to be in the same area or neighborhood, whenever your son would start school?

Phoenix Drive is in a rough part of Fort Worth. You do not want to live very close to your work. As others have said, the Las Vegas Trail area is very high crime and has a lot of very low income residents. The Fort Worth Star-telegram has been doing a series of stories on this area for several months, and it is truly heartbreaking.

Go with North Richland Hills.

If you really wanted to stay close to your work you might also consider looking into the Benbrook area. I would generally recommend the areas south of I-20, though that's normally because the schools are better there... if your son were closer to school age I'd definitely recommend staying south of 20. In your current situation anything south of Chapin Road (pretty much all of Benbrook) should be fine. The only area of Benbrook that seems remotely "rough" would probably be along Williams Road right at Chapin, in my opinion.

Without knowing your budget suggestions are a little bit tricky.
