Will be there in about 1.5 weeks. I'd like some info on the best local restaurants either in FTW or to the north and east of her for:

*Steak (not outrageously priced, but am seeking a "Texas styled" steak experience
*Cajun (not higher end creole, but a hole in the wall)
*Mexican (again, seeking holes in the wall...but one where people of all races will feel welcomed)
*Pizza
*Anything else you would consider unique to Fort Worth (that's not considered trendy or overly expensive)

Notice I left out BBQ. That's on purpose. I'm good on that lol.

Thanks for your help!

Steak - Reata Downtown (a bit touristy and $ but good, the rooftop patio/bar is cool)
Cajun - Flying Fish, Boo-Rays near Eagle Mountain Lake or Weatherford for the original
Mexican - Street tacos at Salsa Limon or Velvet Taco. Los Vaqueros in the Stockyards, Campo Verde in Arlington
Hamburgers - Fred's Texas Cafe, Rodeo Goat
Beer - Martin House Brewery, Panther Island Brewery
Chicken - Gus's Famous Fried Chicken, Lisa's Chicken

Everyone says to go to Joe T. Garcia's for mexican. While I don't think its terrible, its definitely not all its hyped up to be. The patio is nice tho.

West 7th street and Magnolia Avenue areas are the trendy areas of town and will have a good selection of local places if you can deal with the hipsters.

Tacos la Banqueta for Mexican.
If you like beer, check out Turning Point Beer in Bedford. If you feel like venturing into Dallas you should also check out Celestial Beerworks and Oak Cliff Brewing.

Steak - another recommendation for Reata. Anything else of top quality is going to be a chain.
Cajun - hard to find around here, but the two earlier recommendations are good. Shuck Me in Southlake is very similar to Flying Fish and just as good.
Mexican - good ones so far with the exception of Campo Verde. Atmosphere is okay but the food is terrible. El Asadero is probably my favorite in FW. I like Joe T’s but I know it’s pretty divisive.
Pizza - Cane Rosso and Campisi’s are Dallas imports but both are really good. Nizza Pizza onUniversity has great pizza. I would Mama’s. It’s local but I’ve never thought it was all that unique.

*Steak-Reata or Mesquite Pit used to like Traildust...
*Cajun -Pappadeaux
*Mexican - Esperanza's , Joe T's for unique. Pappasitos or Uncle Julios for fajitas.
*Pizza - Weak pizza town.

Steak: Reata, hands down. Go upstairs to the rooftop bar and have a drink at sunset.
Cajun: honestly, not a cuisine that we do well here. I guess Flying Fish and Pappadeaux.
Mexican: La Familia on Foch in West 7th, Esperanza's
Pizza: Parton's on Cherry Street. REALLY old school pizza buffet. I don't think they've changed anything since it opened in the 1970s.

You also MUST try chicken fried steak. That is a VERY Texas thing! The BEST is at Mary's in Strawn, TX about 1.5 hours west on I-20. If you're not up for the drive, go to and of the Mama's Daughter locations in Dallas, and make sure you're hungry!

I will be moving to the area in April and was wondering about the food scene myself. I currently live in NJ where there are loads of places to get authentic ethnic foods. I'm partial to Indian, Szechuan, Middle Eastern, Vietnamese and Korean restaurants. Can anyone recommend places that serve those cuisines? Also, are there any big asian markets in Ft Worth like H-Mart or 99 Ranch where one can buy asian veggies and ingredients?

Not on your list but don't forget dessert. Swiss Pastry Shop is a Fort Worth iconic restaurant. Burgers are great, and the cakes/pies/pastries are to die for.
