Just moved to the DFW area last year. We did our licenses and registered our daily driver vehicles back in December. I had another vehicle in storage out of state and recently brought it to the new house here in TX. When I tried registering it, I was told I had to pay SPV tax on it of $600. They are trying to tax me on a car I've owned for nearly 20 years.

Is this for real? It's been a very irritating subject, as this doesn't make any sense. It almost doesn't even sound legal.

Has anyone had to deal with this and is there anyway to fight this?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Texas. The land of taxes.

Did you buy the vehicle used? Did you pay sales tax on it when you bought it?

If you paid taxes when you bough it, and paid less than what you would have paid had you bought it in Texas, they will charge you the difference. FYI, Texas also requires you to pay for an inspection and renew your registration every year instead of just one and done.
