I just moved here from the Northeast and for the first time in my life, I have a pool. However, I'm not used to the fierce sun here (I'm fair skinned and burn easily) so I was thinking about getting a lenai over the pool. My mother is in Florida and they are extremely common down there. However, when I ask around here, no one seems to know what I am talking about. After looking around, I notice that I don't see any pools in the neighborhood covered by a lenai. Is there a reason that they aren't popular here like in FL? Also, if any of you do have one, can you let me know who installed it, if you think they did a good job?

I know what you are talking about and love them - however, the expense vs risk of damage from wind and hail takes it off my list.

The key words you spoke were" just moved here." You haven't seen how bad the hail can get. A few years ago we had two severe hail storms hit my neighborhood. There weren't any tornadoes or high winds. The hailstones splashing into my pool were so big that my pool looked like the Bellagio fountain. World like "softball size" and larger were used to describe it. Every single house on my street had to get a new roof. A lanai (not lenai) would have been destroyed. If you want, erect sail cloth over your pool. When high wind or hail comes through, it will be much cheaper to replace than the roof of a lanai.
