I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for moving companies; I live in Northern California and have never moved across multiple state lines before. I would like to get an idea of how much other residents have paid to hire a moving company and what your experiences were like. Not sure about surcharges, any taxes, etc., things that may be hidden or unexpected. I'd like to make one trip and don't have anyone who can make the trip with me.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Don't really know about movng companies, but do have some suggestions -
Call several companies as a lot of them will send a trailer off that is only partially full - you may be able to get a deal by helping them to fill the trailer
--If you don't mind doing the packing and loading yourself, check with PODS and the other companies that drop the container off at your residence, pick it up, drive it across the country and drop it at your new residence...sometimes it is cheaper - sometimes it isn't

With fuel prices where they are, most companies charge a fuel surcharge...be sure to ask them what their percentage is when getting a quote...and get that quote in writing, otherwise, they can raise that percentage without your consent.

Good Luck

I would look for a moving company with its own Authority to haul interstate-wide. Those particular moving companies usually will charge less because you will move with the same company as apposed to moving with a uhaul(or Similar company moving truck) paying rental fees+Mileage+gas+other traveling expenses(food, lodging, etc.)
