Fort Worth has a large African american population and way more to offer than El Paso. You will definitely fit right in.

Default Both great cities -- just different cultures

Well, hopefully you've made a decision by now, but in case you haven't or for anyone else that may be Googling this topic, I'll post my thoughts for whatever they're worth as I am in the healthcare industry and have lived in both cities for years.

Jobs: Obviously more opportunities in the DFW area, but there is NO problem finding a nursing job in either area as both are always looking for nurses.

Crime: They are about the same. El Paso is a bigger city and has problems with gangs, but the metroplex has plenty of crime as well and no one can really say that you are more safe being in one or the other. It really only matters on where you live inside the cities. If you choose El Paso, stick with the Westside or far east El Paso. Juarez/Drug crime gives EP a bad name especially for people that have not lived there - they tend to think all of El Paso is terrorized daily I suppose which is sad since it really is a neat city. If you decide on Fort Worth, stick with the Westside or Central area. Many "affluent" people in Tarrant Co. tend to live outside of Fort Worth in places like Crowley or Keller, etc.

Language: As was stated by a previous poster, it would be helpful to learn Spanish as a nurse pretty much anywhere in the U.S. El Paso would give you the immersion to the language you would need to learn enough Spanish within a few months.

Diversity: You would think that Fort Worth wins this hands down, but having lived here half my life, I know that the cities are equal, but in different ways. I realize that El Paso isn't the most African-American friendly place in general, but I can't say that Blacks are truly accepted/integrated in the metroplex with non-Blacks either. Look at "affluent" areas of the metroplex and you will often see them predominately one color. Same with churches and other social events - people just stick with what/who they know. There just doesn't happen to be a lot of non-military African-Americans in El Paso, it's not that El Paso is purposely excluding Blacks. As far as other diversity like politics, Gay/Lesbian, etc, Fort Worth is a very conservative city and you should expect to work with much more Republicans whereas El Paso has a very strong Democrat base and much more tolerant of other diverse backgrounds - by tolerant, I mean the typical El Pasoan will probably not care either way if a person was gay for example.

Cost of living is a little bit higher in El Paso for homes believe it or not. Finally, as others have said - there is much more to do for children in the Fort Worth area. I would recommend El Paso if you wanted your kids to be raised in a strong Hispanic community; otherwise, Fort Worth is probably your better bet.

I didn't do justice to either city with this "short" write-up, so I would suggest going to a bookstore to find a truely unbiased look at what each has to offer.

Arlington might be a good fit for you. UT-Arlington has a great nursing program, many nice hospitals, and there is a TON of stuff for kids to do. The city has an extensive parks and rec program. Of course there is also the new Cowboys stadium, the Ballpark, Six Flags, Hurricane Harbor, in addition to several city-run water parks.
