Um, it's very easy to get out of jury duty, though I can't imagine why anyone would want to.

Yes it's boring, but it is the only time you can have direct input on the law and how it is execute. As a juror, if you don't think someone should be guilty of a crime for not wearing their seatbelt, you don't have to convict them. If you don't think smoking pot is a crime, you don't have to convict them.

The easy way out of any jury duty is to claim that you cannot be objective. You can say, "I hate cops and can't be trusted to objectively review any statement by police." and that's it. You're out.

Thank YOU!!!! I am called too many times for jury duty and I am getting tired of it!!! There are people out there who are unemployed that wouldn't mine getting paid for seating around... call them in.

You still have to go down there and sit around for a while, even if you use that line. My feeling is that since that is the case, you might as well go ahead and do the jury duty. Chances are you won't be selected anyway.

If you are selected, you are supposed to decide based on the law, not whether you agree with the law. Of course, that's up to you.

I will still go and tolerate it. And if I am picked I do realize it is not based on the law but what evidence was ALLOWED to be presented and I base my decision on that; not the law or what is moral or true.

actually it is the LAW which dictates what evidence is allowed to be presented at trial--and that evidence and the preponderance of doubt and the viability of witnesses are what a jury is supposed to base its decision on--those and the parameters of the law involved--
not what someone on the jury believes is "moral"---which might be more or less harsh than what the law supports...
a jury is not supposed to allow personal belief systems to override the evidence and law of the case to arrive at a verdict

Dear Judge,

I went to the Doctor for what I thought was a routine cough and it turns out it’s the chicken swine flu. I think it would be highly irresponsible of me to risk others with this highly contagious flu. (Cough for effect) I request to be dismissed from Jury Duty.

----You still have to go there--

why ?

Texas should run their system like many other states.

Where I live you get a jury notice well in advance and are told you have to mail an appeal if you believe you can't serve.

You then are assigned a number and given dates that you must call in to see if you have to report. A recorded message reads off the numbers ID of the people who actually have to come in amd show up.

Many people where I live ( myself included) have recieved jury notice and never had to go to the courthouse.
