If you are looking near downtown Fort Worth, Arlington Heights, Rivercrest, and Mistletoe Heights are quite nice (and expensive!) I'd stay away from the east side. Those areas tend to have much more crime. The far north area has a bunch of nice, newer suburban communities (Fossil Creek, Heritage, and Park Glen) and they are also close to the new Alliance Mall, but traveling into downtown via 35 S can be brutal because of the growth. Hope you find what you need. Good luck!
