In all likelihood, yes. In the past it has been a grey area if the crack does not infringe upon the drivers view. In more recent times, it has more and more often been viewed as a safety issue since it introduces a structural defect in the windshield strength and durability.

thanx johnrex~~ I kinda figured. It's a pretty large crack. No glass coverage so we have been putting it off Are there any good glass companies I could call for when we get there???

I can't tell you anything about the glass companies. I last used one over 10 years ago. I would just suggest looking online for specials and the phone book for coupons. Other than that they are all the same to me. Maybe someone else will chime in.

I just had my windshield replaced. I have glass coverage so I was only out the $100 deductible but the 2 cos I called quoted me $200-250 cash.

The key is, is the crack in the driver's line-of-sight? If it's off on the passenger's side, or at the very top or bottom of the driver's side, then you're probably okay.

there are some companies that try to repair windshield cracks vs replacing the window--they do it with some type of clear polymer that is supposed to be strong and secure--don't know about that--but have seen the ads--and their comments that it is safe and less expensive...

It works a good deal of the time, with certain types of damage, and if you catch it early.

I've had even the repaired ones start to travel under certain conditions. Still, I give it a shot.

BTW, this works only if the crack is smaller than the area of a quarter.

In the past month I have had two windshield replacements done on two separate cars. Did not have insurance so cost right at $200 for each. I used safelite.com booking and specifically the location on Rufe Snow (I think NRH) and then the one off of Division in North Arlington. I had no problems with either site but budget 1.5 - 2 hours. I thought the one in Arlington was faster but there's nothing around it to do something while you wait. I went to Fuzzy's Taco shop in NRH while I waited and should have brought the computer since Fuzzy's has wifi.

The one thing I did not know is that they can take off your registration and inspection stickers and reapply them to the new windshield. I thought you had to wait until they were very close to expired. Maybe those were the old stickers?

Yeah sorry people, first poster and I seem like a billboard for safelite and Fuzzy's.

I've used Safelite in the past and would use them in the future.

Plus they come to you!
