There is an extreme need for an additional bridge crossing over the Potomac River between Leesburg VA (formerly the fastest-growing population county in the entire USA), and Frederick or Poolesville MD. Unfortunately, such a bridge will never get built in the foreseeable future. Upper Montgomery County MD is all a designated "green space" with protected zoning to prevent sprawl development, which any new bridge would bring. Also, the MD government wants to keep Marylanders using BWI airport and therefore discourages anything to improve their access to Dulles airport VA.

Well, the commute won't be fun. My husband works in Tyson's Corner and his commute, on average, is an hour and 20 minutes each way. Sometimes more, rarely less...depends on when he leaves, the weather etc.

Rt. 7 is getting so congested, he says, that he opts to go down I-270 and take back roads to get to where he needs to go. Bring a GPS with you and very quickly, you will learn how to navigate around this awful rush hour. I think the DC rush hour is rated the 2nd or 3rd worst, LA being #1.

If you can find one more person to drive with you, then you can use the HOV lanes in Frederick. I'm not sure if the ones in VA are 3+ people or not.

If you have to be there by 8:30am, I would leave Frederick later than 6:45, especially during the school year. Once summer ends, there is more traffic on the roads.

Good luck and don't forget your GPS!

Just to clarify, there are no HOV lanes in Frederick. Do you mean Montgomery County?

Also, to the original poster, from the Rt. 15/340 split in Frederick south to Leesburg, Rt. 15 is a slow, 2 lane country road. It's a pretty drive, but you'll be in a slow line of cars, especially if you get stuck behind a truck or RV. Lots of people do the drive daily, but I imagine it takes patience.

Sorry for interruption, but I'm in kinda similar position, and I might have to drive from Brunswick Crossing to Tyson's corner for work. Let's say it's ok to come to work by 9:30 or even by 10:00 am. What time would I have to leave Brunswick?
