Hi All, I will be getting stationed in Fort Detrick in the end of May when I get back to the states. I'm very interested in alternative energy vehicles in particular the Chevy Volt.

I was just curious if Frederick has any type of support for electric/plug-in vehicles, in terms of charging stations or anything of the like.

I appreciate any responses.

I haven't heard of anything for Frederick yet. So far the company producing them are installing them in lots of places in MoCo.

One nice thing is that you don't NEED to charge the Volt while out and about and can simply charge it at home overnight with 110v. If you can commute les than 40 miles a day round trip, you can probably go most of the week on electricicty alone and only fire up the gas engine on those rare occasions when you need to go more than 40 miles in a day.

Oh, and BTW, GE Healthcare has announced that they are forcing their non engineer field staff to drive the volt (GE apparently makes the charging stations). And you wonder why GE stock is suffering!

First thing I would do is check with the Local Chevy Dealer to see if they are one of the dealers selling (and supporting) the VOLT. Now a warning I won't walk on Fitzgerald Chevrolet's lot in Frederick. I don't like their style of doing business. I deal with a smaller Chevy Dealer in Nearby Thurmont (The one in Middletown closed a couple years back) that will not be selling the Volt in the near future. I don't think Frederick is a target market for the Volt. There is too much high speed open highway driving. there are a lot of Hybrids around here but a typical commute is 30-50 miles each way down I-270 towards Washington, I-70 towards Baltimore or US-15 to Reston/Dulles Virginia.

The large scale Chevy Dealer in Gairthersburg (Criswell Chevrolet) probably sells them but that is 25-30 miles down I-270 from Frederick
