A friend of mine just moved to Frederick and shes been getting informed about cancer in the water or something like that in Frederick. I'm not sure at all and a Google search didn't bring up too much about it. Her neighbors are saying its from some army base but she shouldn't worry because it only effects people who use well water?? I have no clue about any of this if someone could fill me in that would be great!!

There are some people living near Fort Deitrick who feel that there is a cancer cluster near the base caused by groundwater contamination. There have been studies by (I believe) NIH as well as the Army. Results are inconclusive or negative but the group claims the data is rigged. Since it has to do with groundwater contamination it would only affect those on well water not on city water.

It has been covered in the Frederick News Post here is a link to an article a little while back.

Mill Run Place is located out in the area known as Ballenger Creek That area is not even in the area being discussed. The area is on the West Side of Ft Deitrick near Yellow Springs Rd. It doesn't even extend to Shookstown Rd, let alone to Rt 40. It is near a part of Ft Deitrick called Area B that was used for dumping in years past. I don't even believe she is even in the same watershed area since their is a ridge of High ground that runs along Butterfly Lane. Also The affected area are places that used to be on Well water (I think all are on city water now but I'm not sure) She is on City Water that comes from several sources - The Potomac River and wells up on Gambrill Mt in the Frederick city Watershed. It is all tested and treated I would have no concerns in that area. I lived for 15 years in the 'Hillcrest' area between where she is and Ft Detrick and had NO concerns then or later. I raised three children there including one who was 2 months old when we moved in. He is now 6'2 and probably 210 Lbs and completed Army Airborne School last year. His older brother is 6'4 and probably 250 lbs. Neither they nor their sister have had any illnesses that were not typical childhood diseases and not even many of them. I would have no problem living or raising a family where she lives (except I like our side of Braddock Mt better :-)

Don't mention to her that the entire state has a higher than expected cancer rate.
