I recommend the Whittier area which is right alongside Detrick and is very safe and has townhouses, condos and they just completed a new apartment complex, see The Park at Walnut Ridge for details:

I first moved to Frederick in 2008 and rented for a year or so here in Whittier. I then bought a property north of Frederick but wound up returning to Whittier and purchased a condo as it is still, to my mind, a safe and lovely area. Lots of runners, bikers and the surrounding area has Cunningham Falls State Park and other places for hiking and fishing or camping. I concur with others who recommended staying away from the Golden Mile, but if your interested, north of Frederick is nice, Walkersville and even further, and has very affordable properties.

It's cool they built some new apartments out that way. You could even walk to the pizza joint there.

I don't see what is bad about the Golden Mile, it's mostly just some shoppes and restaurants. If that is supposed to be a dangerous area, I would have never known it.

It's not dangerous, it's just mainly low-income and has a bit more crime than most of Frederick, although it's mainly drug-related and non-violent. More quality of life issues than safety issues. With that said, it's not really a desirable area, as it's mostly just chain restaurants with a few grocery stores, department stores and such. Probably not a good fit for the OP.

I thought it was funny they call it the Golden Mile but then people are always saying stay away from there. LOL

Did that proposed Walmart get the green light for the Golden Mile? I know some people were opposing it but that would spur growth on the road like nothing else can. I was somewhat surprised Frederick could support 3 Walmarts but I guess the small towns around have to come to Frederick for walmart and other stuff.

I always liked driving west on that road, you get a good view of the mountains and you get that mountain city vibe. I was kind of surprised more upscale development and n'hoods didn't prop up along 40, given it is a direct shot into downtown.

Back 30 years ago The Golden Mile (TGM) was a vibrant area that was the center of development. I won't say the developments just off TGM were THE area to build but they were very desirable and upscale.

The FrederickTown Mall held the limelight of shopping areas between the 7th Street Shopping Center and the FSK Mall. Even after FSK was built there were new shopping centers and refurbishments being done on TGM.

In my opinion the downslide began in the mid 90s. It was slow at first but the owner of FrederickTowne Mall started letting it slide. Then the homes up in Hillcrest started becoming popular with larger 'families' (I'm not sure all met the 'traditional' definition of families) By 2000 there began being a larger faster influx of Hispanic families. Property values continued climbing during this period and many of the families that moved in were solid hardworking people. We saw the change in the neighborhoods start in the rental townhouses and apartments. Much of this is common in older rental properties wherever you find them. The easy credit for home purchases only made it worse as some of the traditional pool of renters were able to qualify for loans to purchase homes. WHen the bubble burst it burst hard and the decline accelerated.

I lived off TGM from the mid '80s till the early '00s. We moved when it was time to look for a smaller home as my kids graduated and moved out. We no longer needed a 4 bedroom, 2200 sq ft house. I've seen other areas make a similar slide. I think the recession just amplified it.
