So I just moved to Maryland a month ago for a job and got my first pay stub. I came from Ohio and on my stub it would have all of my federal, state, and local taxes on it but my maryland stub there is no local tax on there. Does Maryland do something different?

Maryland has a 'piggyback' tax where the county gets to add a percentage of the state tax to the basic state tax which is collected by the state and distributed to the counties. The county gets to decide what percentage they want I think the max is 60% (most counties get 50 or 60% a few claim less) So it all shows up as state tax on withholding

So the local is distributed through the state tax, correct? I was just confused bc I didn't see a local tax and was, wondering what was up. I didn't want to get banged on tax return season if I was missing something

Over the years I have found that withholding is sometimes 'light' because of the piggyback tax so I always have some extra withheld to make surew I don't owe at the end of the year

Your pay deduction most likely contains only the state portion. You will have to pay the piggyback or local portion when you file your tax return. I often had them withhold extra. But check with your payroll people.

When the piggyback tax was proposed it was supposed to last for one year.
