just wanted to boast about our g/e bills. We have a split lever 1960 4 bed/3 bath 2100 ft home with a state of the art HVAC (Carrier infinity), alternate electric carrier, led and cf bulbs throughout and computerized thermostat, efficient windows, top of the line insulation throughout. Last month in South Jersey where it was pretty hot our bill was $148 with all taxes and surcharges for gas and electric. Actual gas was $11.78 and elect was $51.19. pretty good huh?

I live in No. Central AZ and, even as hot as it gets here, our electric and gas is pretty cheap. I think our gas bill this month was in the $20 range BUT all the fees, taxes, etc. etc. really drive it up! Our meter serves two houses and we use gas for water heater and cooking only. And heat in winter, of course, so it's higher then but not horrible. Considering there are four people using these for showers, laundry, cooking, etc., it's not bad at all. The electric meter also serves both houses, we both have swamp coolers and both are conservative when using lights, TV, computer, etc.. Actual electric usage isn't much but, like the gas bill, there's a TON of added charges. Same with the phone and all the other utilities as well. We'd be way better off if we only had to pay for ACTUAL usage!

I hear you! My electric and water come as a combined bill. With all the stupid charges for "access fees", "payment in lieu of taxes", etc., etc., the bill starts out at $50 before any utility charges are even added. It's a rip off!

We pay water, trash and sewer every three months here and it seems to me it's not much over $50-60. I'll have to look at the bill again...it's at my mom's. Electric and gas are separate, of course. It seems like they come up with a few more 'additional fees' every month too.

Last month's bill (combined) was about $64 and we were above 90F ten days last month. And we use standard light bulbs and an 80% efficient furnace.

Since prices vary widely in the U.S. it is not particularly useful to quote dollar figures--KWHs for electricity and therms or 100 cubic feet for natural gas are preferable.

Our gas bill was $17.00 this past month. That was the cheapest it's been in four years. Guess we're doing something right. Oh, that includes taxes, fees, etc.

But you live in "a state of denial" (Sorry, couldn't resist that one).
Gas bills in U.S. are low, as it's summertime. What's your bill run in the winter?

316 Kwh and 2.0 Decatherms for me. Next month's power bill will be horrible. We've had an unsually hot June.

Well, the $11.78 and $51.19 are impressive, but $148 is kinda high to me. How does your utility company manage to add up 12 and 51 and make that equal 148?

However that works, I'm with you on trying to minimize utility bills - they go on forever, you never pay them off like a house or a car.
