I like to have a nice yard, live a decent life and not spend all my time working; be able to spend more time with my child. But so many places these days if it's cheap to live there its full of horrible people and from the looks of it there's an establshed culture of trash. They are idle, like to stand or sit in one place running their mouth, preferably with a beer in their hand but won't fix up where they live or pick up garbage etc. Dogs barking, slack jawed kids aimlessly running around. No structure at all. Are there any nice places in the USA where you can buy an affordable little house and not be surrounded by this crowd??? Oh and not be totally isolated?

My suggestion is to move to a city with a low cost of living, like Pittsburgh.

That way you still get an affordable house without buying in the cheapest neighborhood.

Rural areas. Of course, there won't be many non-trashy people around, either.

Best bet would be small towns in Iowa, Wisc. or Minnesota.

You know this from experiencing, or are you just basing this on what the media has told you?

"Where can you live simply and avoid trashy people? "

Nepal comes to mind.

Nepal is a place with very limited sewer service, and once you get outside of about Katmandu, the norm is apparently to squat in the field and just go.

I'll agree with the poster who said Midwestern mid-sized metros. Think Pittsburgh, Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo, MI, etc.

The OP did say "live simply"...
