My grandfather passed away in December at 88 . He hated computers and still did his taxes on paper and mailed them in.
Same with my father, who died in 2014. He used to talk about the evils of computers until he needed me to look something up for him. My father was all worked up about the IRS reducing the size of his refund. As best as I could figure out, the tax laws had changed, and my dad had failed to keep up with the changes. He died before he could complete the 2013 tax forms, so I had to do it. His taxes were so complicated that I took the HR Block income tax course in the fall of 2014.
I started doing taxes in the early ‘90’s and they were initially simple then. I could spend 3-4 hours on a Saturday and get them done. All were done using a pencil, a calculator and IRS forms - by hand.
I started using a CPA in 2000 after my taxes got a bit more complex.
My CPA retired in 2011 and I started doing my own using TurboTax Premier, which has really worked well the last 11 years.
I was speaking to a client a few days ago who still files via paper and pen. She got some type of correspondence from the IRS and when she called (couldn’t believe she got through!) was advised to resend her form electronically to quickly resolve the issue.
When she balked, the IRS rep started to lecture her: “you senior citizens…” She was angry! Gave it to her right back.
Is there really a free online income tax filing service? Would you share the names of the online services that don't add aditional fees? They all seem to find something to charge for. What is a reasonable fee for one of the online tax services...and why?
Why revive a FIVE year old thread to ask this???
