I was looking at LV strip prices for Motel 6 and eight nights was considerably cheaper than three nights.

Has anyone heard of such a thing? Is that common?

Motel 6 in Las Vegas
$49.00 x8 nights =$392.00 +Taxes $52.48 = $444.48
$183.32x3 nights =$549.97 +Taxes $73.59 = $623.56

It looks like your booking different dates. Perhaps your 8 day stay didn't include NY Eve? The rates vary widely depending on the dates.

I see NY Eve at Motel 6 Tropicana is $215/night for two nights.

It’s common for a number of hotels to have extended stay rates. We used one earlier this year at a Staybridge Suites where the per night option for 7+ nights was about $25-30 cheaper a night than the low rate offered for a two night stay.

And if you want more obscure, there’s a point a few weeks along in the United Kingdom where a stay in an extended stay or ‘aparthotel’ goes from being considered a hotel to be renting an apartment and the VAT tax on the room/suite goes down to zero or close to it

As for Vegas, room rates vary hugely depending on weeknight vs weekend and which circus or convention is in town

In Las Vegas, that happens all of the time. Last week, I paid $135 for FIVE nights (Sunday-Thursday) of Thanksgiving week. Friday night was $180 and Saturday $240. It all is an issue of supply and demand. Weekends and holidays can be very expensive. December is generally very cheap EXCEPT for Rodeo Week and New Years Eve.

Early January - time of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) - rates would be also high, though maybe not like NYE level pricing...

The Four Queens in downtown LV is usually a really good deal in December and its the only strip hotel without a resort fee.

A lot of it depends on what dates you are booking for. If you want to hit Vegas for 3 days, starting on a friday or saturday, you are most likely going to get slammed. Book for a week or so, starting on a day like monday or tuesday, you just might end up getting a cheaper rate than the 3-day weekender.

I understand the basic concept that a room rate in Vegas is very volatile. But I am just starting on the same day and I looked at the rate for 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 nights. At 7 days the rate per night dropped to $49.99 (their normal lowest rate).

Just gamble enough at a respectable Hotel and get your room comped.

In January, you have the CES show which seems to have been in decline.

Also, you have the porn industry conventions in January and sometimes the pre-Super Bowl activities.

And of course, NYE.
