Like the idea of the dollar check. As posted above, personal past experience especially sending anything to IRS where HAVE to by paper in Kansas City or other tax center not good - last year saga fail on USPS tracking forgetting last delivery scan, certified mail (IRS does not always sign), and anything that can be done quickly in the self service lobby to reduce exposure to COVID is better vs a full service line of people where cannot always socially distance. Area/region here full of people from 100 different countries with current CDC international travel advisories for many of them.
To knock on the wood, I have been filing paper returns for 35 years, and they have not been lost. I have never sent them certified, just regular. You can open an online account with the IRS which gives you some info (though not much) re whereabouts of your return. If you file a paper return, best to file it as early as possible, ie, Feb.
