So aggravated. I managed to get exactly one red tomato off three plants before the squirrels discovered them - they even took all of the green ones. Sigh.
I'm in North Carolina, zone 7b (Durham) - is it too late to start over? I should have built a huge, ugly garden cage as I did a couple of years ago, but this time I foolishly put my garden beds next to my deck, allowing for better critter access!
I forgot what kind of tomatoes they are, but they are indeterminate - I was thinking of trying to get some determinate plants if that's even possible in late July and trying to keep the squirrels out (last time it was pvc pipe and chicken wire).
On a positive note, they haven't yet discovered that I have three lovely watermelons growing, which I will be enclosing somehow.
You might try to see if any nurseries are basically giving away plants that didn't sell - I wouldn't count on any though, although as you said a quick growing determine MIGHT be possible? Sorry to hear about your tomatoes. I had thought it was squirrels doing the damage here but discovered it's also Blue Jays!! Check Craigslist, etc. - someone might be clearing some out?

If you can't find a plant with green tomatoes already on it, you probably should give up until next year. I had that problem until two years ago when I bought a greenhouse. With the added benefit of earlier planting and later fall tomatoes
I haven't had anything stolen by creatures since. It was only $200 with free shipping. Something like below. The zippered door sucks so I built one with
wood frame and 1" screen so bees can come in but not animals.
