Is there such a thing as a fruitless flowering plum tree? I want the purple leaves and the pink flowers but no plums! I want to plant it in my front yard for ornamental reasons and not shade. I live in northern Utah.
Yes, ask your local garden center for the "ornamental purple leaf plum" tree. They grow 15-25 feet tall with beautiful pink flowers in the spring and an abundance of purple color throught the summer. I'ts decidous and they rarely if ever fruit.
Egg, there is such an animal on the market and nitram has you covered. That's what we plant for people who want the vivid color and contrast of a japanese maple without the cost. Beautiful tree
Thanks for your answers. Does a Japanese maple have the pink flowers too? I was told October would be a good time to plant a tree. There are quite a few nurseries (is that how you spell that?) and garden centers in my area. I just want to MAKE SURE it's fruitless.

Go to Monrovia Nursieries on the web and check out the plum tree you desire. All ornamental plum trees, about 25 varieties, are hybrids. Hybrids generally do not produce fruit. Ocassionally you'll find one that produces a minimum amount of fruit set. But that is a rarety.
Ask any nurseryman or garden center professional about what is available for your area. I believe you can plant about any one of them where you live. Also your State Agriculture Extension Svc can answer all of your questions too.
Thanks for the lesson in plum trees. There are several nurseries/garden centers in my area where I can probably get what I want. I just need to take the time now to research what I want, and where to get it so that when I'm ready to plant, the tree will be ready for purchase.
Does a fruitless plum tree have purple leaves when very young? A tree has sprung up and grown to about three feet high a few feet away from my present adult fruitless plum tree. This little tree has leaves the same shape as my adult plum tree but they are green. If I can verify that this sprout is a fruitless plum that will have purple leaves with more growth, I would let it keep growing. Please advise. Thanks. Mary in CA
