I just moved into a new place this year, and when summer came so did these annoying fruits!! Or are they flowers? They're all over the courtyard in my complex, falling from large trees... and now squished into half of my outfits & shoes. Anyway, I was wondering if you could identify them for me? Mostly for curiosity's sake, but also wanna make sure they're not toxic to my dog (in case he eats one).
Please excuse the artsy photos - I was playing with the macro on my new camera, LOL.
After going rotten...
P.S. I'll get a picture of the trees if you need... forgot to do that!
That's what my roommate said, but when I googled lychee it looked different... thanks for the identification! How do they taste? And yeah, it's kinda weird they're growing in San Francisco - but this is a heavily Asian (mostly Chinese) neighborhood, so I wonder if they imported the seeds specially?
Yep looks like lychees. They grow 'em in Hawaii too. But in SF? Wow. That's cool, what neighborhood are you in?
Not cool now that they're falling, and literally making a paste of goo across the ground... I now have to clean three coats/sweatshirts, after accidentally sitting on them outside (on my patio furniture). They are pretty though! I live sorta in the Sunset district, near San Francisco State Univ. It's very cold, foggy and temperate here, so I guess they like that kind of weather. Is it similar to their native environment? Obviously not anything like Hawaii, but maybe the mountainous parts of Asia?

I ate a ton of lychees at the lychee festival in Shenzen in 1994. Interesting fruit. The skin is easily separated from the flesh (which is not unlike white grape in flavor and consistency, only with a stone) and the whole fruit is about the size of a smallish plum.
I concur - that's a lychee. It is probably growing illegally, btw...
