nothing but a couple large night crawlers that I was drowning, so I sat on the porch a while till dusk, and started hearing something running through the porch gutter. The hole is right below the gutter, so thought maybe I was on to something so I moved to the walk so I could see - a bat flew out of the gutter!!!??? I don't think it's a bat cave down the hole
Sounds like you have a local critter or two trying to find dinner. Could be a raccoon or an armadillo or perhaps a local critter we don't have here in Florida. Fill the hole up with dirt - see what happens. I'd bet next day or day after - you'll find that hole dug out again if it's a good place for dining . Robyn
I have the same type of hole- one only that I can tell. It is a bit larger than a half dollar circumference though, just by a little. The first thought that came into my mind were snakes, garden snakes, I suppose. My fil ran the hose down the hole but nothing. He said it figures, whatever has done it, if it lives in there, would have built the inside quite well so that if it rained, it would not get flooded. I would not see any dirt around the hole, just the hole itself. Finally, my mom and I decided to cover it w/a plant pot that I had laying around. No hole appeared anywhere else. And after a few days, the hole was gone. I still have no idea what built it, but I have not seen that hole anymore.
Snakes cannot dig holes. They do live in them, but it is a hole that was dug by some other animal.
The armadillo diggings I have seen look like someone shoved a shovel a few inches into the ground, rocked it back and forth, and then pulled it out. More like someone sliced the turf and pulled it a bit than a round hole.
I have no idea. There is the Carolina tiger beetle which lives in a hole in the ground and chases down other bugs when they walk by. I've heard you can tease them out with a long piece of grass if you rub it a little around the rim, but as I've never done it I can't offer better advice. Probably a few other insect suspects laying eggs or building shelters.
Hmm I didn't see the picture before the other post. I have no idea. That's too big to be a tiger beetle or any other insect. Definitely not an armadillo though.
I live in Cary, NC and have the same problem. Holes without mounds. I will try to flood them out ("it" or "they" have snacked under the rose bushes). I do have a trap I will put out too. The number of holes is increasing. I put out some mole b gone (some chemicals I bought a Lowes) I think I pissed them off.
I doubt Lowes were pissed off. Nevermind... just teasing. I've been told the holes could be snakes; however, I've never seen one on my property. The holes are about one and a half inches or a bit less.
I see lots of tunnels in my yard, but there is also a rather large hole. Approximately 10 inches across and a foot deep. There is no soil around it on the surface, rather it looks as if the grass is caving in. Ideas?
Does the hole continue after 10"? If not - if there are no tunnels collected to the hole itself - that sounds like something an armadillo might leave behind.
If there are tunnels - Possum springs to mind. What part of the country are you in?
