I keep finding holes in my yard! They are about the size (in diameter) of a quarter. They are perfectly round and there is no mound of dirt anywhere near it (so I'm thinking it's not a mole). I am finding multiple holes, in a similar area of the yard. We do have voles, (I know because my cat LOVES to eat them) and I find them tortured and deceased in my driveway. But we've always had voles and I've never found any holes until this year.
Any ideas?

I have had these in the last 3 places I've lived - Roanoke, Richmond and now Clayton. I witnessed ground squirrels (chipmunks)using these in Roanoke, but I am not sure if they dug them - maybe.

I should add, they are rather deep and go straight down. Much deeper than a squirrel digging (we get those too)

We started getting some of these holes last summer, along with a population boom of chipmunks.

From everything I've read, moles leave mounds of dirt by the hole.

Yes they are not only deep but also long - let me elaboarate - we had a population of chipumunks in a large rock pile about 100 ft from the rear corner of the house. There was one of these holes near the rock pile. I would see a chipmunk go down the hole, and then 20 seconds later, appears from a similar hole right below our deck at the rear. They would peek around, then head back down the hole, and 20 seconds later, the critter would pop up in a third hole that emrged where the bird and squirrel feeders were at the back of the yard - they could get 200 feet underground from their home in the rockpile, to the feeders, without being "exposed" to predators in the open yard.

Ah, I see now. in your first post, I saw "squirrels" not "ground squirrels" (chipmunks). My bad for not reading more carefully.

Chipmunks, huh. How do I get rid of them? I'm VERY surprised my cats haven't taken care of them for us already. They're serious mousers and we find lots of dead voles and the occasional mouse.

I wasn't "allowed" to get rid of them - - my wife - - you know. Besides the voles were 10 times worse and ate the roots off about every flower we ever planted there.
