I have melons in CA that also were planted late. In my case, it was early June, since it kept freezing here until then. The largest of them is about the size of a baseball, and there are numerous smaller ones coming in as well. I don't really know what type of melons they are, since I planted a melon mix, and have several plants. I just hope they mature before it freezes again.
I'll supress the urge to write down my first response! I grew the "Sugar Baby" variety of watermelon, been growing them for years. Very sweet, great flavor and smaller than Basketball but larger than a volleyball.
Planted a cantelope seed from a store-bought cantelope that we ate. Plant growing like crazy but have yet to see one flower. Me thinks its one of those genetically engineered deals where the 'lopes can't reproduce.
Oh please, is nobody in the gardening forum, growing melons?
Well......I was, both the SugarBaby watermelon and Cantalope, but, both have quit producing. Suspect next year I will stagger my planting as I do with other veggies.
We had a vine sprout over month ago in the front garden and I left it grow out of curiousity. I didn't know if it was a pumpkin( from the jack o lantern), watermelon, squash or a cantelope( we spit seeds off the porch, LOL). It took over quickly and I was glad to see it was some kind of squash, butternut probably. Then the 3 inch long squash turned yellow and fell off the vines. We lost a few zucchini that way, too. I gave it a good dose of epsom salts diluted in water, thinking maybe it was blossom end rot. What causes them to fall off like that?

Did the stem leading to the baby squash turn black, or have holes in it? If so, it was probably squash bugs or japanese beetles. They damage the stem so badly the vegetable can't get any water or nutrients. I lost a lot of grapes this year to japanese beetles this way...
