I live in Houston and have been bitten by mosquitoes a lot. I am wondering if there is any device that I can use to keep the mosquitoes away. I saw devices with MATS but then it means I have to buy mats all my life. Is there a one time purchase device which does not take mats or stuff?

When I lived in Huntsville, AL I would go to a place like walmart of costco and buy the most economical spray on repellent like OFF or whatever: most ounces/$. It's the cheapest way to do it and it works.

Mosquito Repellent

Well....you are in a warm climate, I'd suggest putting out 5 or 6 hummingbird feeders. The sugar water solultion (DO NOT USE RED COLORING) is their energy source, their food sources are mosquitos and gnats. I put out hummer feeders each spring and summer, my neighbors all complain about mosquitos, I don't have any and we are back in the woods, can't see the house because of my trees, and I have a creek, still no skeeters or gnats, I suspect that the bugs are like Hummingbird popcorn.

I wonder what percent of the mosquitoes on your property are actually eradicated by hummingbirds.

If this is true, I'm putting my hummingbird feeder back up!

We had one up for a while and it attracted so many birds that we had to refill it every day and we got tired of it, so we took it down. But if they do eat mosquitoes that prolifically, I'll definitely put it back. I'm going to research this. We can't stay outside for any length of time around here without being eaten up.

This is all because of the climate...you can use repeller, liquid gel or netting... these do not cost so much, so you can buy any one.

I have no way of knowing that percentage. I do know that we do not have either mosquitoes or gnats (my closest neighbor is about 150 yds away through the woods) can't see either his house or his lights. He has mosquitoes and gnats. What else eats these pesky critters? I have just assumed that the hummers are helping me out because I do know that they are a serious part of their diet. The only difference between my house and my neighbors, well, other than not being visible from the road and not being able to see my closest neighbors, is the hummers. We have been feeding them for the last 10 yrs and sometimes it almost looks like a swarm of bees fighting one another at the feeders. We have long since quit trying to count the hummers at our feeders. I do know that at the height of the season we go through more than a quart of nectar (Sugar Water) a day.
