poor squirrels. How are they to know you put the food there for birds and not for them. They are smart-but not that smart. When we put feed out we don't care if it's the birds that get it or the squirrels or any other critter.

I wouldn't care if the squirrels got to the food it's just that they destroy the doggone feeders getting to it!! They have chewed through the string on a couple of the feeders causing them to crash to the ground and crack and chewed the roof off of another. I have since replaced all of the string with wire so that problem is taken care of. I just might try the old coffee can trick on the pedestal feeder this weekend!

My dad has a number of Feeders on poles/post and he attachés a piece of plastic rolled in the shape of cone and it seems to do the trick. He also received a feeder last Xmas that was squirrel proof it is battery operated and when the squirrel lands on the feeder it spins and throws the squirrel off. Not the most humane deter ate but it sure is fun to watch.

If I were not feeding the squirrels it would be different, but they have their own food source, and I have started putting it in a bowl on the ground for them to eat. They also have water they can drink which has come in really handy since we have been in such a terrible drought.

I get around 8 squirrels per day and they are just all over the place, playing and eating and I love to watch them, but they just will not leave my bird feeders alone, it is much harder for them to climb the tree and shinny down the rope to get to the feeders than it is for them to walk up to the bowl and start munching away. Go figure.

I agree, it's not them eating the food I dislike, but they destroy the feeders. I do put food out for the squirrels too.

Squirrels are the number one nuisance animal in the United States. Squirrels can cause extensive damage to attic insulation or walls and gnaw on electrical wires in homes and vehicles, creating a fire hazard. They can squeeze through holes 1 1/2 inches in diameter or gnaw through smaller holes to gain access to homes.

We have three pecan trees and it's a battle each year for the pecans. Squirrels are smart (the ones around here are or we are mighty dumb.) When the war is waging hot and heavy for the pecans we have opened the back door and right there when we would walk down the steps the squirrels have cracked pecans as if to say ... ha ha we won this round.
