On a previous thread somebody told the story of holding a hummer in his hands until poor thing could recover from running into something. I was so envious and thought that was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Well today it actually happened to me.
This morning when I got up I noticed a frantic hummingbird trying to get out of our back screened in porch. The door was wide open over night but he could not figure how to get out. I tried a sho him with a broom and began to panic myself as I saw how frantic he was and he would not perch on anything to rest. Finally he grabbed hold of a screen panel and just was real still. I calmly scooped him up in my hands and went on the deck to sit down with him until he could recover. While I was holding him, I was so worried that he would have a heart attack or else he had really hurt himself.
The kids were inside jumping up and down shouting "Mama caught a hummingbird!" "Can we come pet him?"
Finally I decided to try to pet him myself and that was all it took for him to catch his breath and away he flew in a blurr. I was so excited and was happy that he was actually OK. Now the kids think I can actually catch hummingbirds. It really was a special moment to actually hold such a beautiful thing in my hand and to see him recover.

OMG I just love your story, I love hummingbirds and where I worked at in VA one would come every afternoon around 2 to eat off of a red flower near the window. You are SO VERY lucky to be able to help this little bird. I loved your story it really touched me!
I have 2 times had my husband at that time, bring me a hummingbird that got caught indoor the building at his job. Both times the poor hummingbird had gone too long without food, and was too weak to fly and quickly dying. I made sugar water, got an eyedrop, gently opened their beak and added a little sugar water. In no time they had enough energy to eat themselves from the eyedropper and then in awhile were able to fly away. Those sure are sharp beaks!

That's wonderful, we have had a couple get detoured in the garage and yes they just need some re-direction and rest.
