What do you guys do in winter to keep from going sir-crazy.

Well, I hunt, that keeps me outside and active. I fish, it also keeps me outside and active. We have a 2.5 acre clearing in the middle of our woods, there is always something to be done in the yard. I have two German Shepherd Dogs, a father and daughter act that truly enjoy catching flung frisbees and one genuine rescue mutt puppy who enjoys chasing after the female Shepherd (who is easily three times her size) and trying to get Jorja (the female shepherd) to drop what she is carrying so she (leilu) can pick it up and run with it. Leilu is smart enough not to try to take things away from Dreifus. He can be a bit headstrong and is capable of backing up his disconcertion. At times, Dreifus does not work and play well with others. Except Betsy and I and small children, he is an amazing babysitter. Also, this is N. Carolina, and, believe it or not, sometimes Basketball is being aired on the tube. Go Heels!!

I spend as much time as possible in my partially heated garage. I say partially heated because the heat source are two South windows and an electric oil type heater that costs about$.30 per hour to barely take the chill off.

I spend most of the winter taking boxwood and other evergreen cuttings and rooting them in the greenhouse to pot up this spring. I have some raised benches with bottom heat and from now till about feb 1st is the optimum time.

Wow, 7 months??? I'm glad I'm in NE Wisconsin!!! I can get out in my perennial beds by the end of April definitely 1st week of May so 5 months, 7 would be a killer!

I manage to keep busy, I help out at the senior center and a local history museum. I need to do some organizing in my basement this winter. I'm teaching myself to play an electronic keyboard, I love to do jigsaw puzzles, I have a 2,000 piece one I'll set up after the holidays.

I'm going to do some closets this winter. I moved into this house 3 yrs. ago and need to really re-think my 3rd bedroom. I have houseplants, too and I'm wintering over some plants in the basement. My neighbor has gorgeous geraniums that he has had for years so I thought I would try, too.

I moved some plants indoors so I still take care of them. One of them is a dwarf lime tree who likes to flower in the middle of winter, so I'll play nurse and help it gets pregnant.

I will start growing seedlings in February for stuff like tomatoes, spinach, & broccoli, and herbs, so they're ready to transplant outdoors in April.

Is the ground frozen until June? If not, start gardening earlier. Everything that says "sow as soon as the ground can be worked" can be seeded as soon as the soil isn't frozen. I start in April (March last year, spring was early) with cold tolerant lettuces, spinach, peas, tatsoi and more.
