I read an article in the newspaper and also heard a radio and TV interview on the owner of a rose that will not stop blooming in SE Pa. A single rose on a bush has kept blooming since before Thanksgiving, surviving repeated frosts. So he named it the " Iron Rose". You can read more in the Reading Eagle newspaper. It was down to 17 degrees last night so I wonder if that finally did it in.
come to think of it...not as cool of course but equally odd, weve got a climbing roase that even after repeated frosts and a couple of snows here in zone 6 thats still sending off new shoots and still getting new leaves...no buds/blossoms, but this is the first year its ever done this...
I live in an old historic neighborhood in Philadelphia. It always surprises - and delights - me how long the rose blooming season is. The very first roses usually start to bud in late April and they continue to bloom until the 2nd or 3rd frost in mid or late December. The last the roses bloomed about a week ago, but the camellias are in bloom right now.
For a city in the Northeast, Philly has a rather mild climate (But we do get some awful snow storms!)
I've seen a rose in bloom get into the start of December this year, and I believe last year as well, in downtown Toronto, which is USDA zone 5 I believe. Granted, it was downtown and near a building so there was the urban heat effect.
I read also an article on a rose that will continue to bloom well into December in Louisiana.
