Hi,

I am a beginner gardener albeit an enthusiastic one I believe. We have a backyard which for the most part is wooded and has a lot of roots. We seem to have oaks, pines and maples. I would love to have something grassy but after reading up a little bit figured that it would be almost impossible to have a lawn/grass beneath the trees. So I am guessing I will have to look at some other plants for ground cover. I have two kids below the age of 5 and I would like for the them to continue to play in the backyard - so any plant that would not tolerate kids running on them wouldn't work.

We live in Raleigh, NC - zone 7 I believe. The soil is red clay.

Sorry for the somewhat long post. I appreciate any help that you can give me.
Thank you!

I'd say Pachysandra would be ideal.

Pachysandra is a good choice for shade, but not really the type of plant suited for playing/walking on.

You might try to start a lawn anyway, at least for part of the yard. A fine fescue would probably do best; pruning some limbs (or a removing tree or two) to let in more light and tilling up the soil to break up roots may help the lawn get better established. Try to seed early (before leaves come out).

Oh, neglected to factor in the kids.

Scratch Pachysandra. Try a lawn with deep shade seed.

Default Thank you!

Thank you for your responses. I'll try the deep shade lawn.
