Sprucing up the spring flowerbed in Northern VA - about 35 miles west of DC and uncovered a pale white 2 1/4 inch by 1 1/2 inch egg - similar to the size of a small chicken egg. Any ideas what it could be? Placed in a warm area but don;t want to find hatching snakes

Put it back and leave it alone. Wait to see what returns to the nest, if it returns, now that you have handled the egg.

Is it a hard shell, or soft and leathery? If leathery, its a good bet that it comes from a reptile-snake or possibly turtle. They usually have a lot more than 1 egg though...
