I am trying to figure out exactly what kind of tree is shown in this picture. I have found Purple Pony Plum Trees around my town in Raleigh, NC, but they do not have the same growth pattern as this purple tree I came across during a recent trip to NJ. Does anybody know what kind of treet it is? Could this be a much older Purple Pony Plum Tree or is it soemthing else all together?

Thank you so much for your help!

Is it possibly a Thundercloud? Not sure if that variety can grow that far North but that was the first thing I thought of when I saw it.

Default Flowering Crab

This looks very much like one of the varieties of flowering crab apple trees we have up here in WI. There are several varieties...some white, some light pink, some fuschia, and some purplish like the one you show here. Royalty is probably the variety (I just looked at some pics in a catalog). They only flower in the spring, but are spectacular!

I have a tree that looks very similar to that one and it's called a purple leaf plum here in Cincinnati. It gets beautiful flowers on it in the spring. I hope this helps.

The tree looks like a purple leaf plum, but the purple leaf plum that I have has more of a reddish/ purple bark. The bark in the picture is the color of the bark of my crabapple, so I am very curious about dandelion's post. I have never seen such a dark crabapple tree. North_Raleigh_Guy, do you have a picture of the leaves?

I'm not positive it's a purple leaf plum but it looks mighty similar to one. I've got a few ancient (30 year) plums that will be replaced this Autumn with young plums, and mine, while they're as tall as the tree pictured, are much much stouter. On the other hand the shape of the primary branches in that photo is quite similar to a purple leaf plum; it might simply be a variety I've never seen before.

Is it the Wistaria tree? There is a Wistaria Festival in the city of Sierra Madre California every year.

It's the world's largest vine grown in Sierra Madre

Check out this website.. it shows the leaves of the purple plum also known as the thundercloud plum. I have a similar tree but don't have the plums so not sure if it is the same tree or not.
