I need a clematis that will grow maybe 4-5 feet at most (3-4 feet would be even better).

I love clematis, but I have a problem: the ones I pick seem to grow about 15-20 feet and completely swallow whatever trellis. lamp post, etc. I put them by. Is there a breed that doesn't grow quite so vigorously? I have a good spot for one, but it has a 5 foot trellis, so I need one that doesn't grow much bigger than that.

Also, it needs to be something fairly common, that I can find at a store like Lowes. I like the bluebell Clematis, but can't seem to find it for sale anywhere.

I would check with some of your local smaller nurseries. Plants can vary quite a bit in growth habit in different climates. There are also many online sources (and East coast!) clematis specialists, try googling it or check with your local extention service for recommendations.

Sheesh, I wish I had your problem. I need one to cover a fence for privacy. I planted 2 and one never did a darn thing and is toast and the other is JUST now coming up. Now that I think about it, I have no idea what variety I planted. I haven't seen any clematis at Lowes or Home Depot either. Maybe a local garden place might have some.

It is a beautiful clematis, mine eventually got around the 10 ft mark, but they can and should be pruned to keep them neat and full.

There are some smaller/dwarf Clematis out there, and I could swear I had seen one at a Lowes....but the online plant guide was not working tonight.

One of the prettiest of the shorter Clematis is the 'Bee's Jubilee' variety:

The following a review of it plus two vendors are listed with good ratings. I have the feeling this variety is not carried in many local nurseries or box stores so that may be the best way to obtain one.

For anyone residing in the UK they have a series of smaller Clematis bread for patio and container use that sound perfect:
