What will happen to weeping willows that are planted to close together? Like 19 of them about 10 inches or less apart. Somebody told me that they will eventually die because they are too close but they are thriving right now.

By the way, there not mine. I'm actually wishing that lightening will strike them.

Weeping willows have mainly surface roots. Planted that close together, they will strangle each other. They should also be very near water; they require a LOT of it. That many that close together will die of thirst if nothing else.

Weeping Willows love lots's of water, grow fast (6-8 ft annually) very big (40+ ft) and are very competitive with other plants. They should be planted about 40-50ft. apart.

Someone is in for a surprise and problems very soon.

Most of them are at least 15-20 ft right now.

When they die you can make whistles and flutes out of the branches.

Hope they are not by your home, they have shallow roots to begin with and if they are choking each other out the roots will be further compromised and in a bad rain/wind storm they can topple quite easily.

19 willows?! Wow. My grandmothers willow just bit the dust after 10 years. It was beautiful but some kind of burrowing worm got in it and that spured on the woodpeckers who put hundreds of holes in it. Now she has the lovely task of getting the tree dug out and that will be no easy feat since the roots are huge and long.

If they are true white willows, their bark is salicin, which is where aspirin (salicylic acid) comes from. They also make lovely baskets and even good strong 'twig' furniture. Just something to do with the pieces when they die...
