You may end up sharing a little of the produce with the children, but they'll have fun and you'll both get a lot of nutritious produce. It can be a learning experience. Ensure the kids read books about gardnening and you avoid any "pedo" issues by ensuring proper chaperones etc...
A few parents may not be comfortable having their kids help a stranger "garden" but if done as a group, I think it would be awesome!
Honestly, that's what I would do and forgo the plastique.

Well I am sure some of the chemicals would really make you sick, so I would suggest you don't buy anything from the local supermarket, maybe not even the farmers market. They can say what they want but unless you watch them plant and treat you have no idea how truely organic the stuff really is. I don't think any of us would use strong chemicals and then plant immediately but one spray isn't going to hurt any of us. At my age, if it were going to my insides would be completely eaten away by now.

I'm going to add some bone meal and work it into the flower beds where we have peonies and chrysanthemums.
