i bought a black and decker electric trimmer has nylon to cut grass.
when it was brand new, i noticed the end part of the nylon is "roughened".

after using it for some time the first few inches of the nylon was gone and i had to pull another few inches. i noticed there's no more "rougnened" portion. all i see is smooth nylon. can this cut the grass?

do you manually roughen the edges of your nylon trimmer?

Your fine! That nylon cord wears down pretty fast - especially if you trim around your rocks or masonry. Even wood (Like trees and boards) wears it down pretty fast. With my five acres I go through the entire spool of line - fortunately; I don’t trim the whole property all the time. The ragged ends do not really mean too much - as far as I know and I used to sell the units (not Black and Decker).

It will not cut as even as your lawnmower. But you got it to trim. I would suggest trimming first; before you cut your lawn. The reason that I like to do this is because the weed eaters leave tall weeds to turn brown on our lawn. When you follow up by mowing; you will remove (mulch) some of these longer uncut weed stalks.

I think what you are seeing is simply the "split ends" of the trimmer line after it has been used. Someone may have tried the trimmer out for a few minutes before you bought it. It's sort of like what you get in long hair after riding a motorcycle without a helmet. The shaft of nylon line, or hair, simply splits and starts looking like a small art brush.

On the other hand, some trimmer string has ribs and is not smooth and round. However, those ribs will run the full length of the line.
