Established hydrangea (hydrangeas, leaves, planting, prune)

I have a Hydrangea for the past 32 years in the same place, and needs to be moved out to a new location. It is beginning to bud out. It needs to be trimmed down, to be able to handle it.

Should I trim it down now even though it is beginning to bud out, or should I wait until it buds out completely, since it grows on its old wood? Thank you,

Ugh not a good time to move it. Just after it has gone dormant for the winter is the best time to prune and move older varieties of Hydrangea.

I reclaimed 60 year old Hydrangeas from my Grandmother's house before it was sold after she passed. It was during the summer and I made sure to take twice the size of the root ball of dirt with them. They stressed and dropped most of their leaves but I was able to nurse them back to health over the next year.
