I have a small area (3' x 3') right outside my back patio door in which I would like to plant either a small shrub-like bush or something 18-24" tall that would offer some color.
The area is partially shady. It is north-facing and is further shaded by a HUGE maple tree.
The area is not particularly well-drained. There is a small overhang (18" wide) above the area, but it still stays semi-damp for a few days after a rain storm. It does dry out in the summer or when it hasn't rained in a while.
The plants around this area are (incredibly short) coral bells, hosta, grape hyacinth, and lirope. I'd like something with a little bit of color.
The area could tolerate a taller plant because it is *right next to* a set of steps that takes one from the patio door to the patio. The steps are about three feet tall.
I am in Zone 6-7
My budget is under $50 for this one area
I did have an azalea in that area, but it died last year. I've thought about a hydrangea, but wanted to see what you all thought.
North Beach-- you must not be too far from where my parents keep their boat. Theit boat is at Herrington Harbor South and we go to North Beach to walk the dogs along the boardwalk.
A Mexican restaurant is going in where Thursday's is now after it moves up to Owings in a couple months.
Right behind it is the Old Bay Tavern which is pretty good.
