I bought a house about a month ago, and the yard looks like a hayfield! I am looking for a lawn mower, but I've never bought one, and I have never used an electric one. What type would you recommend, electric or gas? Its a fairly large yard, about 13,000 sq ft. I'm looking for something that isn't too expensive.

Thanks for your advise!

The question is how big is your lawn?

For an over grown lawn you need a gas mower. Once its at the proper height a electric will do. Depending on the amount of lawn you have.

Heck a push mower will do if you need an excuse to work out.

Most people will probably say, Gas, but hubby won't use anything other than electric. He loves his mower and he has had both.

15,000 sq ft is like 150' x 100'. Eliminate Electric from equation. Aside from dragging the cord everywhere you dont have the same power as a gas not to mention an hours worth of electric being used. It will cost you more in the long run.

As far as Gas Mowers... There's always something you have to sacrafice when your choices are limited. Not expensive means a small mower or a no name brand or little horsepower. I got 100'x50' yard and I regret getting a 22" mower. Get a wider mower so you dont have to do 1000 rows of mowing.

Toro with Honda motor has treated me well starting every Spring on second pull.

Dont let people scare you regarding maintenance. Spark plug, Change Oil, Check Filter, Clean gas, Change blade. No big deal.

I just saw a super nice Self propelled Snapper at Costco for 299 yesterday.

Good price for a good product like Snapper.

Personally I have a $140 Lowes special from MTD. It runs great with no extra frills.

I have electric rechargeable, I do the front one day the back the next, never ran out of power. No fumes, spark plugs or gas to mess with. It is heavier on account of the batteries though.

I've heard these are a hassle to keep the blades sharp. What's your experience?

I'm learning toward electric but I have a very small yard.

I haven't found it to be a hassle at all.
It is the most unhassleish thing I own. It's easier to use on some grasses than others though. I'd imagine grasses with somewhat coarse leaf texture like tall fescue and st. augustinegrass would be a little difficult but I haven't tried it on either of those.

They sell them at sears. give it a try. If you don't like it, you can return it.
You can listen to your mp3 player while you mow. It's quiet enough to mow at night or early morning when it's cooler without waking up the neighbors. .
