My friend is a plant collector and if something catches his eye, he'll try to take a cutting from it and see if it survives in his backyard.

When I visited him in NY he had a bunch of these plants in a bucket of water and they seemed to be surviving quite nicely.

He said he got it from Florida where the plants practically grow as ground cover and he took it from the front of a Denny's if I remember the conversation correctly. I think he said it has a fragrant flower but my memory is a little fuzzy now.

Would like some more detail on what the plant is so I can figure out how to care for it better. So far it's survived being in a sunny window for about 6 months.

thanks in advance.

looks an awful lot like oleander and they are poisonous so he had better be careful that a child or a wild animal does not get a bite of it .

yes thanks. it looks like Oleander to me also and the growth habit matches what he described to me.

I've already told him about it and will try growing mine in a pot this growing season to see how the flowers look then let it die to make space for the next plant.

The pics you have are of milkweed. There are some as ornamentals but they are often seen in grasslands. I don't know of any being grown indoors. See these: https://www.google.com/search?q=milk...w=1366&bih=667

luv4horses, the leaf shape is just like the milkweed picture you posted but I've grown 2 different types of milkweeds and they are not quite the same because the color of the leaves are a darker green for my plant.

Pictures of the Oleander look just like the plant in question. Also I'm noticing that it drops a fine mist of sap all around the plant and if it's poisonous, I'll have to keep it away from everything else.

Going by just the one pic that is linked, to me it looks more like an avocado plant. The veins in the leaves look different to me than oleander. I've only seen a couple of avocado plants, and the blooms don't smell wonderful, but they don't stink either.

I don't have any experience with these, but the google images I pulled up of Oleander don't look like your plant to me. The leaves, yes. The flowers? No. The milkweed flowers posted upthread look just like the ones in your original photo.

Maybe I am confused. You have a link to a photo album and there are three pictures of milkweed in flower in that album. Is that not the plant to which you are refering? Leaves are darker and lighter green depending on growing conditions.
