This behemoth dominates one entire side of my house. Smells nice this time of the year, but desperately needs to be trimmed back. Am trying to at least sound someone knowledgeable before I call a company to do this -- any ideas what it is?? (Not an NC native, and not terribly into plants, anyway, so am naive to anything but the very basics!) Thanks!!

Big Giant overgrown photinia. At least that's what it looks like on quick inspection.

Damn I thought the ones I had of the side of my house were big.

Gorgeous tree! Hope you find a tree surgeon that will do it justice.

Looks like somebody has actually done a pretty fair job with those in the past. Most of the ones I've seen that were anywhere near that size were just big old overgrown blobs. Those actually look like trees!

Does the tree get red berries in the summer?

Nope - no berries. Just these flowers (for probably another week) then it just IS. But it IS huge -- and needs to be trimmed back from the house (and probably more than that!)

I'm pretty sure that is a photinia. The photinia's in my area have been blooming like crazy and we have some huge ones however I have never seen one that actually is cut like a tree. As DubbleT mentioned, the ones I see are all big shapeless blobs that are overtaking their space. It looks like it needs to be trimmed up from the bottom and the side closest to the house.

Then it is not of the serrulata variety. When you get it trimmed make sure to hire a competant company that employs an arborist. I would be interested to find out what variety of Photinia it is as I have never seen one that large out side of pictures from China. Great specimen tree you have there.
