Indiana farmer Mike Starkey does not plow his fields and uses fertilizer only sparingly, but he is on the cutting edge of a growing trend in American agriculture.

Advocates of his “no-till farming” technique say it could provide the low-cost, environmentally-friendly crops the agricultural industry has sought for many years.

The farmers around here have been using that no till method for at least 20 years. It's very rare to see a plowed field. However the soils around these parts are pretty light and that plays a part. There are bands of heavy soils running through the area and if they are used for crops they are generally plowed. Mostly these heavy soils have grapes, apples or pears growing on them so they don't get tilled at all.
