I want to plant some carrots, potatoes, and onions this winter on my balcony.WHat do I need?

What kind of containers and soil? Where are the best seeds?

When we lived in an apartement, we only had a balcony, and what we did was buy a few big bags of potting soil.
Placed those down on the balcony floor, poked holes in it at regular intervals, and planted strawberries in them. Created a drip system, and had a bloody good harvest !

We were lucky to have a south facing balcony with a very thin iron balcony *gate*.
