@H20hzrd who says Round up isn't bad? Monantos (the ones that denied the dangers of PCB for 40+ yrs) or the government that Monsantos pays off? That stuff is evil and should be stopped . Just google "round up problems" and you will see. PLEASE STOP USING "CIDES" and let nature work its magic

Thanks for citing another unscientific study conducted by those in the dark. Your ilk would have us plowing the ground with mules, using child labor to pull weeds and rioting in the street when you can't fill your belly. I applaud your ignorance!

Monsanto used to advertise that roundup left no residue in the soil and they were taken to court in at least two different countries. They were ordered to stop using those claims as they were proven untrue.
Furthermore, there have been studies here in the US proving Roundup is hazardous that have been ignored because the powers that be are/were in bed with monsanto. Especially when it comes to spraying "roundup resistant" crops to kill weeds in farms.
As for the OP, my experience with roundup, both consumer and "pro- concentrate" (this is still a consumer herbicide) is that it completely ineffective in killing turfgrass, namely bermuda and bahiagrass. It's also largely ineffective for killing blackberry and certain unwanted trees and shrubs.
Great for killing fish and birds though.
It'll kill the daintiest of broadleaf weeds but you're left with dead weeds. that may be fine for agricultural or utility purposes but if this is landscaping we're talking about, you might as well pull them out.
There's a tool called a Weed Hound. It's a metal rod with a claw at the end. You place it over the weed and pull the handle and it pulls the weed out. If you want to be the best steward of the land you can be, using something like a Weed Hound instead of chemical herbicides is the way to go and it looks great instantly. You don't have to spray it and hope for rain (which RU needs to be effective on a lot of stuff) and hope the pets don't get into it and hope it doesn't contaminate your groundwater or injure or kill plants you care about.
By the way, I've also used the Spectracide non-selective herbicide. It is even less effective than Roundup brand.
Another reason not to use Roundup... do some research into the company that makes it and the stuff they're up to. Then make up your own mind.
I don't use herbicides anymore since I found out how harmful they are...and how beneficial at least some weeds are to humans, the environment etc. I am on the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and I'm trying to do my teeny part to be a steward and help clean it up.
I am looking for a powerful herbicide to control weeds and brush like growth which want to continually grow up through my mulched areas. I recall reading in this forum about a product which prevents any growth in small selected area by "sterilizing" the soil versus just killing the weeds. However I have searched and have not been able to find the post. Any help would be much appreciated.
I'd stay away from soil sterilizers.
Get a $15 pump garden sprayer.
Get an off-brand of RoundUp (the active ingredient is Glyphosate). The off-brand will be far cheaper, and probably more potent.
Spray the weeds every couple weeks, or however often they emerge. You'll only kill what is sprayed, but you will kill everything that is sprayed.

Yep, you will most certainly find all kinds of inaccurate hype, regarding RoundUp. People scream their ignorant lungs out about it.
Funny thing is... RoundUp has been on the market for over 40 years, and there has never - not once - been ONE SINGLE health problem tied directly to RoundUp. Not one.
By the way, you can stop scream about Monsanto. They lost the patent to Glyphosate long ago.
I've attended lectures sponsored by USDA ag ext agents re; weed control. Round Up does not pollute the ground or water if used properly. And yes, you need a stronger percentage to mix your own so read labels. I've used the stuff for years. Don't saturate the ground!. You only need a very fine mist and I use a sprayer called "herbi" - you cannot even see the mist coming out. There are issues with weeds becoming resistent to Round up. It is worthless against bermuda grass. Sure you can spray it and it dies but as soon as you water/rain, the bermuda is back and that's because the roots go down 5 feet! No lie. Hand pulling weeds or using a lettuce knife to cut under the the soil is what I usually do but in large areas such as my 1/4 mile gravel driveway, I use Round Up. I would never use anything that could damage the soil or trees. When in doubt, call your local ag ext agent.
