Hi all,

I have an area of lawn (sod) in my backyard. This summer I started getting these weeds pooping up in my lawn. I've been pulling them when I mow but they still keep coming back. Is this some type of crabgrass? Sorry I admit ignorance to this type of stuff. Can anyone identify these weeds and how can I effectively get rid of them beyond pulling them out.

It looks like a sedge. Possibly nutsedge.

There's a few things that immediately come to mind but without knowing where you're located (just your state is fine) and if there are/were any seeds/seed heads/spikey balls and if you can describe what they looked like then we might be able to say for sure. Just grass blades alone don't narrow it down enough. (for me anyway)

no spikey balls or seed heads, just long blades.

Sedge. Most likely a nut sedge. Scroll to the bottom for links to pictures of the ones you have in CA. Weed Photo Gallery, All Categories--UC IPM

The best artwork I could find to illustrate was on this page Grasses, rushes, and sedges, oh my! - Fine Gardening Question & Answer which also had a good explanation of the old saw: Hollow grass, sedges have edges and round rushes.

Since you mentioned living in Ca here is state specific advice in how to deal with it. Nutsedge Management Guidelines--UC IPM It is a PITA to deal with in some cases. I yank it in the garden constantly but have not had to resort to chemical warfare yet.

Thanks for the info. Thank you all I appreciate it. I had a friend who does landscaping also confirm its nutsedge. Pesky stuff.
