Anyone raise Sweet Potatoes? My Grandfather, born in 1896, use to raise several varieties of Sweet Potatoes on his farm in Kentucky. He had one variety that was orange when baked and weighed from 1 to 2 pounds. Have lost the seed. He called it the "Butterball" because of its round shape and extra buttery sweet flavor. Wonder if anyone has such a variety.

Mom says the "Porto Rico" is her favorite. She claims a fresh-baked one will ooze sugar when it is cut open!

We have a lot of varieties of sweet potatoes around here, but mostly I only know their Hawaiian names. One of my favorites is "uala piko" which is purple on the outside and white on the inside. "Okinawan purple" is just the opposite, white on the outside and purple on the inside. "Helehele" is white on the outside and white on the inside. The best tasting one is one I don't know the name of. White on the outside and creamy yellow on the inside with green triangular leaves. Helehele has long vines with a bright green triangle leaf, Uala Piko has deeply serrated almost purple leaves. There are another couple dozen varieties around here, but I don't have them in my yard or know their names offhand.

Here's a link with a rather long list of various heirloom sweet potato slips.
