I am about to buy a house in South Florida and the house has an automatic sprinkler system but no provision for rain or wet soil. How would I add a sensor to the system?

Every major irrigation brand has rain sensors. Find out if your timer accepts the addition of a rain sensor then follow the directions for that timer and sensor on installation. In my experience standard residential collection sensors that you attach to the house are usually fairly worthless.
