Hi
I'm in Oregon but understand so.ca weather..
Go to the libary and check out a copy of Sunset Western Garden and the Square Foot Garden book.
Start watching how much sun you get in the area you want to use ..The above 2 books will also give you
an idea of tools you might want.
For starters, a small shovel, a trowel , clippers, gloves are a must, hoses for watering and the list can go on and on.
Do your homework before you every buy a thing.
Read the thread above yours on balcony/apartment gardening..Its endless what one can grow in a small space.
Good luck

I did a little checking on Organic Gardening, Modern Homesteading, Renewable Energy, Green Homes, DIY Projects .
Tips for Small-Space Gardening - Natural Home Living

I've read about people taking those big planters, or half barrels, and "grow a salad". Plant a tomato in the middle with leaf lettuce, radishes and onions around the edge of the planter. There are also sheets of planters you can hang on the wall to grow things.
