Wow, too bad that's invasive, because it's really beautiful. It sounds like the glossy buckthorn we had up in Chicago. That was a real thug that was threatening the forest preserves.

If someone wants a privet, then L.japonicum is probably the least invasive, I seldom see seedlings of those.

Wax Myrtle (Myrica cerifera) or Devilwood (Osmanthus americanus) are the best native replacements for Privet along the gulf coast.

Ha!! I think, you guys are right. The berries looks like privet. Mine has wider leaves, almost round. But I bet there are many varieties of it.

Not sure about how invasive it is. I have a single tree growing in the middle of the backyard. The tree is growing pretty fast, and provides a great shade. There is nothing growing from the seeds, when they fall on the ground. Not many fall anyway, because I have like hundreds of waxwings coming and they love it. The bad side of it is the black poop everywhere! However over a week, all the seeds are gone, now I am waiting for a rain to wash it out

Thank you all... great job with ID the tree.

BTW: Interesting observation about the birds: they sometimes pass the seeds from one to another. Like the first one is harvesting and feeding few other birds. Fun to look at it

Elnina, mine didn't necessarily reseed in my yard either, but the birds pooped the seeds all over the neighborhood. I still see plants a mile down the road along the ditches and in other peoples yards, and I'm convinced these came from the huge mother plant that was in my yard. I let that thing stay around longer than I should have.

If you want to be absolutely sure, bring a branch in to your local nursery, or ideally, your local Extension office if there is one nearby. You might also be able to send your photos to the Extension service that covers your part of the country. I'm thinking it would be Texas A&M.
